Kyle Hand, besides working for a living, tying fishing flies commercially, raising Rare Heritage Breed Turkeys has enough spare time (his wife Susie pretends to like me but I know she really loathes me) to tie a Jock Scott in stages. Not only that, he has prepared three different wings using my Dyed Sooty Slate Turkey, dyed white turkey and some of his own white turkey that he dyed. Yes he is into dyeing materials as well. He also shows his Harvest Gold Turkey in lieu of Golden Pheasant Tail and Florican Sub he made himself. Click on the thumbnails below to see a larger image:![]()

Photo A above depicts all three wings photos 1 through 3 correspond with Kyle's captions below.
Wing 1 was made using dyed Sooty Slate turkey - shows the nice subtle "antique" look of the wings. Harvest Gold substituted for Golden Pheasant and my florican sub used instead of true florican
Wing 2 was made using regular dyed materials with Kori and Golden Pheasant.
Wing 3 was made using the feathers I dyed the other day.
As you can see the fly I am currently working on used the dyed Sooty Slate feathers and I think turned out very nice.
I think it turned out mighty nice. See for yourself below: ![]()

Photo 1: Here I have tied on the tail, the Indian crow sub for the tail veiling and have already done the underbody, and using Mike?s body divider tool, have marked where I want to stop the rear half of the body.
Photot 2: I have tied in the Ostrich herl butt, the rear half of golden yellow floss and the rib of oval silver tinsel.
Photo 3: Here I have tied in the front half of the body with black floss, ribbed with silver oval tinsel and wound the black hackle. I did not have any neck hackle but was fortunate to find a nice saddle with the "Christmas tree" effect that I like and wound it on and was pleasantly pleased by the result. I have also mounted the rear body veiling using yellow CDC. I only used one feather above and below and should have used more as it looks a little anemic but we are all learning, right? ![]()

Photo 4: Now, I have tied in the underwing of White tip or Narragansett turkey for the underwing (yes, it?s one of mine)
Photo 5: Here I have altered the original pattern just a bit, I have used a Vulturine body feather for the throat. I like the blue tinge to the end of the feathers and the brown flecking through the feather. I think it highlights the blue slip in the wing. Let?s face it, I am a blue freak and really enjoy using the blue to add highlights to the fly.
Photo 6: Here I have mounted the wing using John?s dyed Sooty Slate turkey for the colored wings, I made the florican sub (using John?s secrete method) and I ended up using Amgold for the top of the wing since the Harvest Gold I was using in place of the Golden pheasant was collapsing too much for my liking. I ended up using the Amgold and am pleased with the result. I am very happy with the dyed gray turkey as I feel it adds a "patina" to the wing which makes it look a little more antique. This is the best wing I have done by the way. I used the Vulcan Death Grip method to accomplish this. ![]()

Photo 7: Here is the finished product. I have added the wood duck and teal veil, with the Jungle cock above that and the chatterer sub over that. I added the blue/gold macaw horns and the fly is finished.
