David White (pictured at left while tying at the International Symposium 2003) has been a good friend for several years. Not only do we share a passion for salmon flies and the materials that go into them but also an affinity for good Single Malt whiskey and fine hand rolled cigars. Not only does David enjoy a "wee dram" now and then he has even toured the Scottish Distilleries where it comes from. Now if I can only get him to tour the Rain Forests and Jungles of South America to find where Indian Crow comes from we will be all set.
David has attended the last two "Salmon Fly Symposiums" in Cleveland just so we could share a drink and a smoke together but my unscheduled illness and an unfortunate death in my family has gotten in the way both times. I did get there for Friday night last time and did get to spend a little time with him I look forward to a day when we can really compare notes on our favorite subjects. David also has another passion of precision long-range shooting and hand loading. The quality tools of those activities is akin to building a collection of Cotinga skins.
Considering all of his other hobbies, and the fact he struggles daily with bureaucrats to secure mining permits in the ?peoples? republic? of California, it?s amazing to me he has time to tie Salmon Flies.
I've just posted a Gordon, David's latest effort. It's a lovely fly but he did a (in my opinion) rather unusual body hackle. In his words: "I folded each hackle separately, then worked one inside the other before tying them in. I really like the density of it, and I may just do that as a standard technique from here forward."
I've posted a couple of David's other flies. A Moonlight tied a while ago and a 7/0 Rory. He has made an interesting discovery as to photography. In his words: I?ve started to use one of those "daylight" fluorescent bulbs at my tying desk, and my nighttime fly photos have been as good as those taken in daylight. Go figure...
David has sent a number of pictures of the Sir Richard in various stages of completion. Click FLIES to see them.
David White has given us a brief "HOW TO" under Educational Resources, entitled, NOTES ON SALMON FLY STORAGE AND TRANSPORT A simple but effective manor of storing and safely transporting numerous flies. I just wish I had numerous flies to worry about transporting them. He has also offered his custom made Wing setter for sale under tools and how to prepare Toppings and Tails also under Educational Resources.
Tie, he does. Just click on the thumbnails below to get a glimpse of his quality work.
