Jon Harrang is a friend from Oregon. We've only met by telephone since he called me a while ago when I was giving away Kori Bustard. At the time he wanted to express his gratitude for the feathers I had sent him as he said "in a small way" by sending me some flies. I declined because I didn't feel I should benefit personally from what I was doing. I did benefit in no small way. We forged a friendship! That is worth more to me than any material gift. Jon eventually got his way because when I asked Jon for some pictures of his flies, he sent me the two mounted flies to the right. Obviously he has been at this a while.

Jon, besides being a nice person is a talented tyer, materials nut, fly historian and he is also an insightful writer. He is an extremely busy family man with three young daughters and a full time+ job. On top of all that he fishes as much as humanly possible. I guess that is why he ties at stream side without a vise. I figured he needed a diversion so I asked him to share some of his thoughts on Fly Tying. Being a man of his word he took time out of his hectic schedule and put together a rather interesting essay. To read some of his thoughts on fly design and tying Click HERE. Jon has also contributed to "The Salmon Flyer" that wonderful publication for Salmon Tyers, written by Salmon Tyers. Jons first two of several contributions appeared in the Spring, 1995 issue. They are all worth reading, to do so simply click on the title to read each one.

IS THERE A GENE JOCK IN THE HOUSE?....................A NEW LOOK AT OLD FLIES

September 3 2005 I used to think Jon had a hectic schedule. He has recently purchased a new home (a fixer upper in the country as he calls it) that takes even more of his spare time. He hopes to have more time this fall and winter to tie flies.

Jon often times ties these flies without the aid of a vise. I guess because he can. He even ties on the rivers edge. Below are a couple of flies tied in hand. I would bet he doesn't turn out work like that on a stream bank, he'd have his vest pockets so full of material he wouldn't have room for flies. The last picture in the row below shows his streamside kit sans feathers.
