Tim Trexler
I met Tim Trexler several years ago at the Fly Tying Symposium in Somerset New Jersey. At the time he was a exceptionally good tyer but hadn't made the leap into the Classic Salmon Fly arena. Here is a quote borrowed from an article Tim wrote about his first trip to the Symposium: " We watched many fine salmon fly tyers who were also urging me to get into the classic full dressed patterns. I always wanted to, but balked at spending the money on rare feathers and such. (I always hid my desire by saying that I tied my flies for fishing, not for the wall.) I took Marilyn {Tim's wife} over to one of the vendors to show her how expensive these things can be. Picking up a matched pair of speckled bustard quills, because I thought it would be the most expensive example, I showed her the hefty price tag. Needless to say, I was flabbergasted when she said, "But look at how many flies you can get out of them!" I always knew she was a keeper, but this incident really drove home the extent of her support." I was not one of the people who convinced him to try Classics but consider myself an enabler of sorts as I was the one who sold him the feathers. Since that time Tim has become a avid and certified Salmon Fanatic. He has made a rapid progression from tying the Classics to now designing and tying his own "creation" flies.
Tim has entered several Fly Tying Competitions where he has always done well.
2001 ? Irish Open Flytying Competition Tim was Competition Champion with 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal, with the remaining 4 flies placing in the top 10.
2002 ? FQSA World Salmon Fly Tying Championship-Gold Medal - Feather-wing Creation Category, Silver Medal ? Feather-wing Compulsory ? ?Black Dose?
2003 - Irish Open Flytying Competition-Overall Silver Position.
Tim also has a web site dedicated to Salmon Flies SALMON FLY ART where you can find out more about him and peruse a number of his beautiful flies as well as purchase them.
Below are a few of Tim's classics as well as a couple of his inspired creations. Just click on the thumbnails to enlarge them.
I just added the Grace Elizabeth, third row, third from the left. This is what Tim says about it: "The Grace Elizabeth was created for Paul Whillock to commemorate the birth of his daughter. I presented it to him at the British Fly Fair."
