Andrew Marshall is a relatively new friend from the Pacific Northwest. Our relationship is as a result of my website. Andrew is a serious tyer with the desire and ability to raise some of his own material. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of Andrew to show you but he did send me the one on the right showing three flies he calls Independance Shrimp. I requested he send me pictures of his flies but instead he sent me four flies. Now that I've photographed them I will be returning same to him. I also asked him to supply me with a short bio so we can learn a little more about him. Below is what he tells us:

I have been tying for near-enough 30 or more years, tying everything from size 28 gold ribbed hares ears nymphs to 8/0 fully dressed salmon flies, bonefish flies to tarpon flies, and everything in between. I have tied commercially on occasion for places like Patricks in Seattle, and a few other places now closed in Olympia. I also have on occasion done commissions. My first big fish on a fly was a 30+lb king taken on a herring pattern tube fly of my own design, off of Ukulet in British Columbia. I usually fish with what ever will catch fish though as my fly casting has been likened to flogging a dead horse. I lose more flies to the surrounding scenery then ever I do to fish. I have fished on the chalk streams of southern England as well as the limestone streams up north, the various salt water areas, lakes and rivers of Washington and now Oregon and even some around San Antonio TX. A few years ago one of my flies (the Koksoak) took 6th in the FQSA world championships. This was the first contest I have ever entered and I was quite surprised to even place at all. I shall be entering more contests as time permits. I am currently engaged in working up various series of featherwing ASF and Rangely streamers as well as creating life-like insects on hooks.
The turkeys came about as I had the space and wanted to recreate cinnamon turkey tails. The breed was very hard to come by, if not extinct. I got lucky from scratch, and after 3 generations have the breed again, and some very nice tails. I also have speckled turkey secondaries that are beyond anything you have ever seen in terms of being beautifully marked. Unfortunately with my impending divorce I will be losing all of that. I will get to clip the tails and wings one more time I think, with any luck, and then I will have to dispose of the birds. The place I am currently living is home to about 150-160 turkeys, but I am trying to move from here so will not be moving my flock down here. I think I am better off with out the birds actually.
I am an avid hunter and fisher, as well as collector of all the materials we love to use in our flies. I also paint watercolors and recreate Neolithic artifacts, arrowheads, knives, spear points etc. in stone, bone and wood.

Click on the thumbnails below to see a larger image of some of Andrew's flies. He enjoys doing a classic fly based on each of the various Old Masters patterns. You can also see a number of Andrew's creations by clicking on SALMON FLY GUY
