That?s my friend David Mangum in the picture to the right. To have a smile like that he must have just seen a dead Indian Crow floating in the water. I?ve known him via the telephone and computer for a few years. I have yet to meet him but the fishing pictures he has sent me make it tempting beyond belief for me to travel to his neck of the woods. He is a Top Fly Fishing Guide in the Destin, Florida area. As you will see in the pictures below David is not only a splendid Fly Tyer but an incredibly talented artist as well. His flies, much like his paintings, are influenced heavily by brilliant colored surroundings he experiences when he spends his day at his "work". He was also kind enough to supply a brief bio, it?s as follows:
"My name is David Mangum and I am a Saltwater Flyfishing guide here in the Panhandle of Florida. (I live right where the big hurricane bull?s eye is on the map). Tarpon and Redfish are the two species I spend the most time targeting in my area, although we also fly-fish for Bonito (little tunny), speckled trout, Cobia, ladyfish, bluefish, spanish mackerel, Jack Crevelle, and even some offshore species at times. Our Tarpon and redfishing is 100% shallow water sightfishing, and both can be absolutely incredible in our area, just as good as in the keys.
The Majority of my fly-tying time is dedicated to tying flies I actually use every day. Salmon fly tying and painting is done in the winter months when the fishing season slows up a bit. I originally became interested in Atlantic Salmon flies when I was guiding in Alaska many years ago, and since then I have become as rabid as any of the rest of you, (when time and money permits.) I approach tying a salmon fly as I would a painting, with thoughts to color, shape and composition. Tying and painting seem to me one in the same. If any one is interested in a painting or going fishing feel free to E-mail or call me at: mangumdavid@hotmail.com Phone: 850 267 2704"
