Philip Glendinning, pictured at left, and I have been acquainted for a few years. Prior to starting this site my friend Don Colman was in touch with Philip regularly. They exchanged things. Philip sent Don a wonderful CD containing copies of all the Kelson articles in the Fishing Gazette pertaining to the Traherne Flies as well as numerous interesting other things. In return I gave Don some stunning Am-Gold Tails that he sent to Philip. I believe I actually see it’s been used in a couple of Philips magnificent flies. In Philip’s humble bio he says he enjoys studying the more obscure Dee and Spey Flies found in his native Scotland. In Jim Shewey’s terrific book Spey Flies & Dee Flies, Their History & Construction he thanks Peter Glendinning of Aberdeen, Scotland. I’m pretty sure it’s Philip Glendinning “who helped immeasurably by providing me (him) valuable details about William Garden and other Deeside historical figures†rather than Peter. Hopefully we can talk Philip into sharing some of the fruits of his labor with us. He has been kind enough to share several pictures of is beautifully tied flies. As you will see below. Philip was kind enough to share this information about himself:
"I am 44 year old married with 2 daughters; I live in Aberdeen Scotland, a great place to live so close to many wonderful rivers to fish.
I started tying flies about 15 years ago, mainly to be able to catch salmon on the local rivers.
But enjoyed it so much, I seem to be tying more flies than fishing. I now tie flies commercially for many beats on the Dee.
After a while I got a bit tired of tying just fishing flies, and wanted more of a challenge, that’s when I started to tie classics, and found to have a love of Dee flies and Spey flies and started to find out about them, where they come from and who designed them.
My love is now to find the more obscure Dee and Spey flies to tie."
