Argus Center Tail

I have read old pattern descriptions that called for "Argus Tail" in the wing. I'm not sure if they meant the Center Tail feather that has a reddish-brown tone or the Side Tail feather. My guess would be Center Tail as they seemed to have an affinity for the color Fiery Brown which I think this is. I even wonder if they even meant the tail at all. If the tier only had some feathers (not the whole skin) he might think the eyed 30+ inch Secondary or Tertial wing feathers were tail feathers. Many people make that mistake today. Not many of those 19Th Century tiers around to ask and unfortunately not very many of their flies either. It's hard to tell by looking at the pictures in those old books. It would be nice to get a good look at the original plates but many of them were artist's impressions of the fly so one may not be able to tell anyway.
I don't have enough that I can sell whole feathers anymore but you will at least be able to use the real deal at a fairly low cost. You will also know exactly what barb length you will be getting. Argus Center Tails are incredibly long, the pair pictured above are 57 inches from tip to tip but the barb length doesn't get over 3 1/4 inches. Side Tails have longer barbs but drastically shorter in overall length.
