Powdered Blue Macaw

This is the tail covert on the Scarlet Macaw. This is the feather used when a pattern calls for Powdered Blue Macaw. A number of the Kelson patterns call for this feather in the wing or tail veiling. It was even split down the center of the rachis and wrapped as hackle. As you can see in the picture above they vary in size. We don't know for sure (we suspect William Blacker; page 34 Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Dec 2003/Jan 2004 issue UK and Are These Blacker Flies) who tied the fly in the picture but we do know he used Powdered Blue Macaw both in the tail veiling and wound as a hackle in the throat.
