MATERIALS: Winging

The fly above is a Popham tied by my friend Kyle Hand. Not only is it a beautiful fly but it is a virtual catalog of FeathersMc materials. Not just the winging material but all of the components as well. "The fly is tied entirely out of stuff you sent me." says Kyle. The colored wing slips are Dyed Sooty Slate Turkey, available under Heritage Turkey.
I have spent the last 40 years collecting all sorts of fly tying materials, and devoted the last 15 to Salmon tying stuff. Of all the materials I have touched, the most fascinating are feathers, and that is where I have majored my efforts. So fasten your seat belt and prepare to go through the best selection of winging materials available anywhere. If it deserves to be part of a Salmon Fly wing, you will find it here. I offer what I feel is the best selection of winging materials available anywhere. I will also be adding new materials as I find reliable sources
Barb length is important to building a wing. The style of wing you choose and the hook you select, dictate how long the barbs need to be. I will, where possible, tell you the barb length of the feather you're buying if it's critical.
