Hooks are where it all starts. Without them we would simply have a small pile of feathers and scraps of other fly tying materials. Hooks are the foundation for such creations as Gordeaux Chesney's Evangeline pictured above. There isn't much standardization in hook sizes even though there have been standard hook sizes, they are directly related to their own manufacturer.
